what is a scholarship?

A scholarship is a form of financial aid awarded to students who excel both in their sport and academics. It helps make tuition fees more manageable and allows colleges to offer financial packages to student-athletes who have the talent and dedication to compete at the collegiate level.

Scholarships typically have a one-year term and are subject to annual review and renewal. The university coach will determine the scholarship amount based on your athletic performance, academic achievements, and overall contribution to the team. It’s rare for scholarships to decrease without prior notice, but poor effort or low academic grades can lead to a reduction in financial support. Stay committed to both your sport and studies to maintain your scholarship. Show up, perform well, and you’ll succeed!

Understanding US College Athletic Divisions

The US college sports system offers a variety of pathways for student-athletes. Here's a brief overview of the main divisions:

NCAA Division I:  Known for its highly competitive programs and large universities. Offers a wide range of sports and scholarship opportunities.

NCAA Division II:  Provides a balance of competitive athletics and academic focus, often with a strong emphasis on student-athlete development.

NCAA Division III:  Prioritizes the overall student-athlete experience, with a focus on academics and participation in sports.

NAIA:  (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) - Features smaller institutions with a commitment to character-driven athletics.

NJCAA: (National Junior College Athletic Association)  - Offers two-year programs, allowing athletes to gain experience and potentially transfer to a four-year university to complete their bachelor's degree.

Choosing Your Path

Each division offers unique advantages. Consider your athletic goals, academic aspirations, and desired college environment when exploring your options.

understanding the SAT test

The SAT is a standardised test administered by the College Board [collegeboard.org], used for college admissions in the United States. Every incoming freshman must take the SAT and achieve the minimum score required by their chosen school, which varies by institution.

The test lasts 3 hours, or 3 hours and 50 minutes if you opt for the optional essay portion. It is divided into segments with short breaks in between and consists primarily of multiple-choice questions. The SAT is offered on limited dates each year, but you can retake it as many times as needed to achieve your desired score. A score around 1100 is generally considered good and will qualify you for admission to most schools across the USA.

The registration fee for the SAT is $52. If you are taking the test outside of the USA, an additional international registration fee of $49 applies, bringing the total cost to $101. You do not need to purchase additional study material books, as we provide comprehensive SAT study resources, including the official SAT study guide, to help you prepare effectively.

NCAA/NAIA Eligibility Center

To enroll at an NAIA or NCAA Division 1 or Division 2 school, you must register with the appropriate eligibility centre. These centres ensure fair play and grant athletes four years of eligibility. You need clearance from the NCAA or NAIA before you can compete for your new school. Since the decision process can take several months, it’s crucial to have all your paperwork ready once you choose your school. If you are still deciding between NAIA and NCAA schools, sign up and create your profile as soon as possible. The registration fee for the eligibility centre is $135.

Visa approval

Before you can attend your new school, you must apply for and obtain an F1 Student Visa from the United States. The F1 Visa is typically issued for 5 years, allowing you to complete your 4-year bachelor's degree with an additional year if needed. Alternatively, you can use your 5th year for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows you to work in the USA for one year.

Duolingo test

The Duolingo English Test is a relatively new exam that can be taken from the comfort of your own home. It serves as an alternative to the TOEFL test and is accepted by over 2,000 institutions in the USA. At just $49, it is significantly more affordable than the TOEFL test. The test takes about 1 hour to complete, and you receive your results within 2 days.

understanding the TOEFL

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized exam conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to evaluate the English proficiency of non-native speakers. It is widely accepted by universities and institutions globally for admissions. The test includes four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing, and typically lasts around 4 hours, including a short break. Unlike the SAT, the TOEFL does not follow a multiple-choice format but involves tasks such as reading passages, listening to lectures and conversations, and speaking into a microphone.

The test fee varies by location, generally ranging from $160 to $250, with additional fees for rescheduling or sending score reports to more institutions. The TOEFL is an essential step for those seeking admission to English-speaking universities or needing to prove their English proficiency for visa applications.
